Rowland Sutherland (flutes)

As a flautist Rowland has regularly been performing with various jazz groups, new music ensembles, symphony orchestras, pop artists and non-Western music groups both as a band member and as a guest in the UK and different parts of the world.

He often composes and arranges music in many different genres and parts of the world for various groups, ensembles and orchestras, and has written for the BBC in England. Recent composition commissions were written for the prominent UK percussion quartet Ensemble Bash and the adventurous new music group New Music Players.

He has played/recorded with various new music ensembles including: New Music Players, Ixion, Shiva Nova, Icebreaker, Lontano, London Musici, Phoenix Dance, Jazz Xchange Music and Dance, Music Projects/London, Matrix and Rambert Dance Company.

As a freelance musician Rowland is also active in the orchestral field and has played with such orchestras as: Philharmonia, Bournemouth Symphony, B.B.C. National Orchestra Of Wales, London Philharmonic, European Community Chamber, Sadlers Wells Royal Ballet and B.B.C. Radio. He played principal flute with the latter three.

Rowland leads several jazz bands: “Mistura” generally performs an exciting blend of hot Brazilian,Afro-Cuban and Afro-funk rhythms with contemporary jazz and jazz dance.His band R2 with Ray Carless on saxophones plays various club dance world beats with jazz. Rowland’s band Creative Force with vibest, Orphy Robinson plays a fiery blend of contemporary jazz with various reggae and New Orleans funk influences.
